Pets, Peeps, and Portraits for Pink on Sunday, September 18, at Urban Tails

www.portraits4pink.org
Urban Tails will be converted into a pink photography studio and gallery on Sunday, September 18, 2011, at 1618 Webster Street for a Pets, Peeps and Portraits for Pink in honor of native Houstonian, Lori Brewer of Waterford Portraits. Brewer, who passed from breast cancer on July 4, positively impacted animal non-profit organizations with her gift of capturing the love and light of people and pets.
Now, four professional photographers will hold a tribute and photography fundraiser for Brewer’s favorite charities. Jack Opatrany, Sonya Sellers, Melissa Hammonds, and Kim Hartz who all specialize in family and pet photography, like Brewer did, are offering private mini sessions for $50. The professional photographers will offer indoor studio settings and outdoor studio settings designed by Buchanan’s Native Plants. Each photographer has a different setting/sitting style which is explained on www.portraits4pink.org.

The proceeds will benefit Brewer’s preferred non-profits-- the Breast Cancer Research organizations, Homeless & Orphaned Pets Endeavor (H.O.P.E.), Homeless Pet Placement League (H.P.P.L.), Lucky Dog Rescue, Pup Squad, Lone Star Shih Tzu & Lhasa Apso Rescue, Pet Patrol and Corridor Rescue.

Brewer’s clients will also bring and showcase their favorite portraits by Brewer over the many years that she photographed their pets. The event will also offer prize drawings for both pet lovers and families. Jewelry such as photo frame charms and photo lockets can be ordered with private portrait session along with portrait packages, art, and other merchandise. Activities will include bra pong, pony tail donations for natural wigs for women undergoing chemotherapy, and make-overs by professional stylists from Craft Salon. Delectable treats such as pink lemonade and pink sweets from Food Network’s Top Chef’s: Just Desserts Rebecca Masson of Fluff Bake Bar.

Appointments are from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM and attendees can book an appointment by calling (713) 291-4439 or emailing Lisa@portraits4pink.org. For more information regarding adoption, volunteering, or becoming a business sponsor for this event, please send inquiries to: Lisa@adoptapethouston.org.

This Blonde Is a Lucky Dog

Sydney, a pup of 6-8 weeks old was found on the side of the road last night and was taken to the Vet by a good samaritan. Sydney has some skin issues due to a lack of nutrition, but is receiving medical treatment for her skin infection.

She should be ready...to go to a FOSTER HOME, next week, June 27th. Many of the Vet clinics are packed for the 4th of July holiday and don't have room. She only weighs 4 lbs. and will come with a crate and anything else she would need.

Contact lisa@adoptapethouston.org or Lucky Dog Rescue if you can help. Please share and re-post!

Press Release: Building a No Kill Community April 30 in Houston

"Building a No Kill Community" workshop could end shelter killing in Texas
HOUSTON, April 13, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Houston and Harris County animal shelters kill roughly 80,000 animals a year, as much as 54% to 89% of all animals entering the shelter, depending on which Houston shelter is involved.  San Antonio, Dallas, Ft. Worth and other shelters kill tens of thousands as well.  But that number could plummet if shelter leaders attend the upcoming "Building a No Kill Community" workshop taught by Nathan Winograd, director of the national No Kill Advocacy Center.  The No Kill model of animal sheltering created by Winograd will teach shelter directors and the community the practices that allowed shelters like Austin's animal control and Williamson County, TX animal control to save 90% - 96% of all dogs and cats entering their doors.
"This workshop will teach us how to "Turbo Charge" adoptions so that animals have a real chance for a new home. It teaches "marketing" strategies to effectively market shelter animals so new pet owners will choose a shelter pet instead of looking elsewhere. It also teaches shelters how to work with rescue organizations and foster parents efficiently rather than kill animals," said Bett Sundermeyer, President of No Kill Houston. "It makes no sense for Texas shelters to kill animals, especially at taxpayer or donor expense, when rescue organizations and private citizens are willing to save them".
This No Kill model of sheltering has created No Kill communities nationwide including Reno, Nevada, Shelby County, Kentucky, Marquette, Michigan, Tompkins County, New York, and elsewhere.  In addition to the United States, shelters in Canada, Australia and New Zealand are following this model and are consistently saving 90% or more of all animals.  ("No Kill" means that 90% or more of all healthy and treatable pets are saved.)
Last year Austin, Texas passed a city ordinance mandating parts of these No Kill programs and their save rates have risen ever since.  H.B. 3450 or Texas CAPA, based on this No Kill model of sheltering, was also recently introduced in the Texas state legislature.
"People of all walks of life want to protect pets, so this workshop appeals to a wide range of people." said Sundermeyer.
Workshop details:
Date/time: Saturday, April 30, 2011; 8:00 am - 6:00 pm
Location: South Texas College of Law, 1303 San Jacinto, Houston, TX 77002

Hours: Weekend days and evenings. Shifts generally last four hours.
